What happens in Pakistan’s high mountains does not remain in the mountains. Declining seasonal snow, accelerating glacier change, and the expansion of glacial lakes have far-reaching implications for downstream communities, infrastructure, water security, and disaster risk. In this BBC Urdu report by Mohammad Zubair khan, I discuss what these changes across the Hindu Kush, Karakoram, and Himalaya mean for Pakistan, and why sustained monitoring, effective early warning systems, community preparedness, and timely evacuation are essential. We may not be able to prevent every cryosphere-related hazard, but timely science, trusted communication, and coordinated action can save lives.
