A swim at one of Germany's most beautiful lakes turned into a real-life treasure hunt • and nobody expected the ending. It was the summer of 2015. A 16-year-old girl was out enjoying Lake Königssee's famously clear water when something caught her eye, glinting beneath the surface. She dove down about two meters to check it out and surfaced holding a solid gold bar. Not a cheap souvenir, either. The bar weighed roughly 500 grams, stamped "Degussa Fine Gold 999.9," worth an estimated €16,000. Most people might've quietly pocketed it. She didn't. She walked straight to the police and handed it over. That's when things got strange. Investigators tried tracing the bar back to an owner, but the serial number had been deliberately scratched away — erased on purpose, by someone who clearly didn't want it traced back to them. Six months passed. Nobody came forward. Under German law, that's enough time for unclaimed property to legally belong to whoever found it — so in February 2016, police handed the gold bar back to the teenager, this time as hers to keep. To this day, nobody knows how a scratched-off gold bar worth thousands of euros ended up resting quietly at the bottom of a German lake. The water gave up its secret. The mystery behind it never did.
