COPVs for H2 storage Despite the current stagnation in the deployment of hydrogen mobility, the composite overwrapped pressure vessel (COPV) for gaseous H2 storage remains an extremely attractive business case for the composites industry. If only 2% of all vehicles would run on H2 (as FCEV or with ICE), the required capacity for carbon fibre production and processing would need to grow by double-digit figures in the next decade. Furthermore, there are no more obstacles for adoption with world-wide regulations in place and sufficient technical maturity, documented by an impeccable safety track record. This opportunity for composites is also reflected by the numerous posts on LinkedIn, promising novel design software, enhanced materials or alternative processing options. Honestly, these “innovations” are irrelevant unless thoroughly validated on a real COPV, passing all tests for certification (which is never the case). There are 3 important points to consider: 1. The price at which the carbon fibre can be purchased 2. The productivity of filament winding, with at least 50-100kg of composite processed per hour (per spindle) 3.
