There’s something you feel when you land in your place of heritage—something no passport or postcode can give you. In Ghana, I felt it instantly. It wasn’t just about identity. It was about connection. Recognition. A grounding I didn’t realise I needed. As a Brit, I’ve grown up navigating systems that rarely reflected me. But standing in Ghana—seeing the rhythm, the brilliance, the resilience—I saw myself more clearly. I saw the Caribbean too. The echoes. The overlap. The shared strength. This trip shifted how I see myself. It reminded me that we belong to something bigger than borders. Visiting our ancestral lands isn’t just a nice-to-have—it’s vital. It reframes everything. Who we are. Where we come from. What we’re capable of. It’s not just about going “back.” It’s about going deeper. And I wish everyone had the chance to feel it. Because when you know where you come from, you move through the world differently. Note: This trip was organised by three incredible women Dyann Heward-Mills Foluke Taylor Christine Fostvedt-Mills to raise funds for an incredible charity called Protect Black Women which provides free therapeutic services for Black women.
