BIG NEWS| Kyoto University Clears Key Review, Set to Become Japan's Third "University for International Research Excellence" ✅Kyoto University has passed a decisive advisory review and is poised to become Japan's third University for International Research Excellence, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) announced on July 3. An advisory board of domestic and international experts concluded that the university's institutional strengthening plan now meets the required standards for accreditation under the International Research Excellence University Act. Kyoto University was selected as a candidate in December 2025 and given up to one year to refine its blueprint. 📊In the most recent global rankings, Kyoto University placed 46th in the 2025 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), with a total score of 33.6. Among subjects tracked by the 2025 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS), the university had 34 disciplines ranked, led by Biological Sciences at 18th globally and Mathematics at 28th. Physics, Chemistry, and Biotechnology each fell within the 51–75 band.
