As Kenya marks the 63rd Madaraka Day celebrations in Wajir under the theme "Education, Skills and the Future," I am reminded that the true promise of independence lies not only in expanding opportunities, but also in building the human capabilities required to seize them. This reflection resonates strongly with an article I wrote while participating in a Green Competencies Development Programme at the Kenya School of TVET alongside over eighty TVET trainers from across the country. Through practical engagement with renewable energy technologies and emerging green economy concepts, the programme underscored the critical role of trainers in transferring knowledge, skills, and competencies to thousands of learners nationwide. The experience reinforces an important lesson: Kenya's abundant renewable energy potential; including solar, wind, and emerging technologies such as green hydrogen, can only be fully harnessed through strategic investment in human capital development. Technology alone is not enough; it must be matched by the right skills, competencies, and mindset. Building on an earlier training programme in Germany, this first national cascade initiative, implemented through a collaboration between the Government of Kenya Ministry Of Education, Kenya (MOE) State Department for TVET and the Government of Germany through Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, represents an important step in strengthening green skills for sustainable development and preparing a workforce that can drive Kenya's transition to a green economy. As we celebrate Madaraka Day, the future we envision will depend on the utilization of resources we possess and the capabilities we nurture. #MadarakaDay2026 #EducationSkillsAndTheFuture #TVET #GreenSkills #RenewableEnergy #SustainableDevelopment #FutureOfWork Dr. Andreas Schaumayer Anne Kamonjo Emmanuel Choge, PMP® Miranda Pendo (.
