Entrepreneur of the Spirit . ~To those who much is given, much is expected~ . Being the son of a wealthy cloth merchant, Saint Francis of Assisi was a man who had everything but gave it all up to follow Jesus. As a result of his incredible compassion and faith, he chose a life of poverty and servitude. One experience that contributed to his apostolic conversion occurred in 1205 at the Chapel of St. Damiano. Francis heard the crucifix above the altar tell him: "Francis, Francis, go and repair My house which, as you can see, is falling into ruins." Francis took the command literally and began rebuilding the Church of San Damiano and other churches in the area. In 1209, he founded the Franciscans. They are considered as initiating the mendicant movement in religious life, which took off in the 13th century but has persisted to the present day. Moreover, the Franciscan spiritual family blossomed into countless congregations for men, women (Poor Clares), and the laity (Third Order Franciscans or Secular Franciscans).
