🧠 What if financial innovation started by listening to the system we’re trying to change? In 2022, as part of the “Abundantly Investing in Girls of Color” work with G4GC, we tested that idea through a tool borrowed from ecology: catalytic factor analysis. We began by co-creating a transformational goal with the community, a north star. Then we facilitated workshops where participants surfaced 70+ root factors that shape outcomes for girls of Color. These ranged from access to safe housing to intergenerational trauma to proximity to capital. Through a participatory survey, we mapped how these factors influence one another. The result? A network showing which few factors shape the rest (aka. the keystones). These are the catalytic factors where the right interventions can have the largest ripple across the system. Instead of asking “what can we fund,” we asked “what must shift?” When paired with innovative finance tools—like blended capital, flexible grants, or trust-based investments—this approach reveals where money can be most transformative. It’s a way to design capital strategies that don’t just fund programs but change conditions. This work reminded us that: ✔ Capital can do more when directed toward systems change ✔ Lived experience must guide investment strategy ✔ Community members know what levers matter most Now, three years later, we're looking back with fresh eyes. 👉🏽 Do these catalytic factors still resonate in your work? 👉🏽 What new forces should we be paying attention to? 👉🏽 How are you using finance as a lever for deeper change? We want to hear from you. Let us know in the comments or send us a note [email protected]. #innovativefinance #systemsthinking #youthopportunity #impactinvesting #futureeconomy #catalyticcapital
