The DFG-ANR program awarded Eric Monnet and me a generous 3-year funding for studying public savings and credit banks in historical cross-country and regional (DEU, FRA) comparison, based at Freie Universität Berlin and Paris School of Economics. While commercial banks have long been studied, savings banks and public credit institutions — crucial pillars of financial systems since the 19th century — remain surprisingly understudied. We will therefore build the first comprehensive international historical database on these institutions, investigate how they respond to crises and drive economic recovery, and explore their impact on regional development in France and Germany — with direct lessons for today's debates on financial inclusion, public banking, and long-term investment. For the project start in September 2026, we will from now on be looking for student assistants and PhD students in Berlin and Paris as well as a 3-year post-doc in Berlin in the fields of historical sociology, econ history, political economy, macro-finance or related fields with strong econometric and (historic) data skills. We will cooperate with Sibylle Lehmann-Hasemeyer at Universität Hohenheim, Jonas von Ciriacy-Wantrup and Dr. Römer! The job openings are published as soon as uni admin allows, via Freie Universität Berlin and Paris School of Economics. Stay tuned or get in touch if you are interested or have questions!
