π Posidonia Oceanica: the heart of Mediterranean seagrass meadows #PosidoniaOceanica is an endemic Mediterranean #Seagrass, widely distributed along the #Mediterranean coast and the most abundant seagrass species in the Mediterranean Sea. It forms continuous meadows from 0.5 to 45 m depth, while in turbid waters the lower limit is around 9 m. This seagrass can be found on different substrates, from rocks to sandy bottoms, showcasing its adaptability. However, #PosidoniaOceanica does not tolerate even slight salinity fluctuations, turbidity, or increased sedimentation ratesβ οΈ. For this reason, it is not found in estuaries, where the input of fresh water and fine sediments is too high for its growth. Its meadows are extremely dense, creating one of the most important ecosystems in the #Mediterranean. π± π To learn more about the fascinating world of seagrasses, explore the SEAQUEST #CurriculumforTeachers π https://lnkd.in/gF-gHXYp Democritus University of Thrace - (D.U.Th.) πΈ Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) πΈ European Marine Science Educators' Association (EMSEA) πΈ STANDOUTEDU πΈ Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR) πΈ Multisensory Experience Lab
