🌱 Seagrasses might look like simple underwater plants… but they are true ocean superheroes! Let’s test your knowledge: 1️⃣ Seagrasses are not seaweeds! They are actually 🌸 flowering plants — with roots, stems and even tiny flowers — just like the plants in your garden! 2️⃣ They are #biodiversity hotspots. #Seagrass #meadows provide nursery grounds and shelter for thousands of marine species, from small fish to seahorses. 3️⃣ They are climate champions. Seagrasses capture and store large amounts of #carbon in their sediments — helping fight #climatechange. This is called #blue carbon 4️⃣ They protect our coasts. Their roots stabilise sediments and reduce wave energy, helping prevent coastal erosion and supporting #climateresilience. 5️⃣ They cover less than 0.2% of the ocean floor… but store around 10% of the ocean’s carbon buried each year! At #SEAQUEST, we’re bringing these fascinating facts into primary classrooms across Europe through #research, #teachertraining, #toolkits and an interactive ocean game 🎮 — helping build the next generation of ocean stewards. Because protecting seagrasses starts with understanding them.
