Anytime I have a chance to talk about Pittsburgh's unique R&D advantage, I usually do so in the context of the dramatic leverage provided by having 2 x R-1 universities physically co-located in the Pittsburgh Innovation District. There are few better demostrations of what Pitt and CMU can accomplish together than the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center. The NSF award (fitting for the center's 40th anniversary!) continues PSC's foundational role in Oakland, and by extension, Oakland's ability to drive Pittsburgh's status as a global innovation hub.
