👩🔬 What happens to advanced materials designed to safely contain radioactive waste… over decades or even centuries? At #CIMTEC2026, our colleague Ferrand Karine, senior researcher waste & disposal, will dive into this critical question by presenting new insights into the dissolution behaviour of glass composite materials (GCMs), developed from the reconditioning of radioactive waste. ☢️ This research, carried out within the STAB-SLAK ETF-project is necessary to evaluate the compatibility of this type of short-lived Low and Intermediate-Level radioactive waste with the Belgian surface disposal facility. With carefully designed experiments under disposal-relevant conditions, this work aims at better understanding how composition drives long-term performance. Read more on the STAB-SLAK project on our website: https://lnkd.in/eDvjgKrh In a second talk by NIRAS Nationale instelling voor radioactief afval en verrijkte splijtstoffen on this topic, the predictive modelling of the dissolution behaviour based on these experimental results is discussed. 🔍 Key takeaways from the study: - Dissolution behaviour strongly depends on material composition - Complex, incongruent release mechanisms under alkaline conditions - Experimental data supporting the development of predictive models 📍 Join us at CIMTEC 2026 to learn more about this research and its implications for safe radioactive waste management.
