🚨 SciQra Alert | U.S. EPA Takes Further Steps to Eliminate Animal Testing   For the first time since 2021, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has expanded its list of accepted New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) for chemical assessments under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) and pesticide assessments under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA).   EPA has also introduced a streamlined process allowing researchers, companies, NGOs, and other stakeholders to nominate alternative methods for EPA consideration.     🔷 New additions to EPA’s recognized NAMs list EPA has added 13 new NAMs from external authoritative bodies. New additions include: - Reconstructed human cell-based methods to evaluate eye hazards - 3D human cell-based tissue models to evaluate phototoxicity - OECD-validated combinations of in chemico and in vitro test data to identify dermal sensitization hazard, dermal sensitization potency, and a quantitative point-of-departure   🔷 EPA's actions supporting NAM adoption - First update to EPA's recognized NAMs list in five years - EPA launched its first laboratory animal adoption program in April 2025 - EPA reported using alternative methods in cancer evaluations for dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) for the first time, sparing an estimated 1,600 mice and rats   🔷 Why this matters - TSCA directs EPA to reduce, refine, or replace vertebrate animal testing whenever scientifically appropriate - NAMs can provide faster and more human-relevant information - Regular updates to EPA's recognized NAM toolbox may improve regulatory transparency and predictability for industry   ✍️ These actions support EPA's objective of eliminating mammalian animal testing by 2035 while continuing to meet regulatory obligations for chemical and pesticide safety evaluations. They also signal continued regulatory momentum toward broader integration of alternative methods in chemical and pesticide safety assessments.   📌 https://lnkd.in/ehXRePA5   #SciQra #EPA #TSCA #AnimalTesting #NAMs #ChemicalSafety #RegulatoryAffairs #Toxicology #RiskAssessment #OECD #ChemicalCompliance
