🤝 How can research, policy and practice work together to address complex challenges related to drug use? This question was at the heart of the #NationalDrugCongress2026, organised by the General Drugs Policy Cell, where Sciensano actively contributed to discussions on the future of drug policy in Belgium. Particular attention was given to the recently adopted interfederal strategy for a comprehensive and integrated drug policy. Through presentations and panel discussions, our colleagues shared insights drawn from Sciensano’s scientific expertise and from our role as Belgium’s national focal point of the European Union Drugs Agency (EUDA). 📊 Reliable data and continuous monitoring are essential for understanding emerging trends and supporting evidence-informed decision-making. By bringing together policymakers, researchers and professionals from different sectors, the congress demonstrated the value of collaboration in translating scientific knowledge into effective public policies. The event also provided an excellent opportunity to strengthen connections across the Belgian network of stakeholders involved in prevention, public health, care, research and policymaking. Thank you to Charlotte Colman, Nele Van Tomme, the full organizing team and participants for the enriching exchanges and for their commitment to building policies grounded in evidence and cooperation. 🙌 We would also like to acknowledge the valuable contributions of our colleagues Lies Gremeaux, Els Plettinckx, Maarten Degreef, Margot Balcaen, Jérôme Antoine, Shona Cosgrove, Elise Braekman, Sarah Nayani and Catho Boone, who represented Sciensano and shared their expertise during the congress.
