Official numbers released today show Australian Government expenditure on research and development (R&D) – known as GOVERD – was $4.4 billion for the latest period, up by just one per cent since 2022-23. That’s the smallest increase in Government R&D expenditure since 2018-19, and in real terms after adjusting for inflation, it actually fell by four per cent in 2024-25. This graph from The Australian Academy of Science shows the bigger picture of how far Australia’s investment in R&D has fallen behind other OECD countries. STA supports the Academy’s campaign to #RestoreScience, by turning around the decades-long decline in R&D investment. Visit the link in the comments for more details.
