Where Berlin’s Future Is Built. High-level visit at the Startup-Villa During their district visit to Steglitz-Zehlendorf, Science Senator Dr. Ina Maria Czyborra, the Governing Mayor pf Berlin Kai Wegner, and members of the Berlin Senate toured the Zukunftsorte Berlin Südwest Innovation Hub, a dynamic ecosystem that also includes one location of Science & Startups. The visit began at the Startup Villa of Freie Universität Berlin, home to more than 20 startups and a core location within the Science & Startups network. President of the Freie Universität Berlin Günter M. Ziegler emphasized the power of strong innovation ecosystems, where universities, startups and industry collaborate closely. Here, Aneta Bärwolf — Managing Director of FUB Innovation, Head of the Office for Transfer and Innovation at Freie Universität Berlin, and part of the leadership team of Science & Startups — provided insights into how the Startup Villa strengthens entrepreneurial talent and anchors Science & Startups within Berlin’s broader innovation landscape. The delegation also met Get2Germany-founder Dr. med. René Rheimann, showcasing the concrete impact of research-driven ventures emerging from this environment. The tour continued through additional stations that reflect where Berlin’s innovation ecosystem is heading: 🔹 FUHUB & FUB Innovation GmbH – with shared labs, the Scale-Up Lab and long-standing experience in technology transfer. 🔹 FUBIC – a new innovation campus set to host up to 80 technology-driven start-ups. The message from the Senatsverwaltung für Wissenschaft, Gesundheit und Pflege was clear: Berlin is strengthening its position as Germany’s leading innovation hub, driven by outstanding research, strong universities, a vibrant start-up ecosystem and new infrastructures.
