Chances are, you’ve heard this advice: “Don’t write your college essay about a service trip—it’s overdone and uninspired.” We’re here to challenge that narrative. When done right, service learning can spark powerful personal growth—and in the age of AI, authenticity and self-reflection matter more than ever. That’s why we turned to IvyWise, the world’s premier educational consultancy, for insight into how students can turn meaningful service experiences into standout essays. As IvyWise counselor Robin Freed puts it: “It’s not the trip itself that makes an essay fall flat, but the lack of reflection. When students write with authenticity and connect the experience to their personal growth, identity, or values, even a common topic can become powerful and memorable.” Two School the World alumni—Vicky Lin (Cornell '28) and Gabriella Turco (Colorado College '28)—are living proof. Victoria drew on her experience for a supplemental essay that connected to her academic interests. Gabriella reflected on how her time abroad shaped her resilience and goals, helping her craft a personal statement rooted in growth and identity. And the data backs it up. In partnership with the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala, our research found that students consistently return home with greater cultural humility, leadership growth, and a deeper understanding of inequality and equity. The study also confirmed that our model benefits the communities we serve—thanks to programs built on collaboration and co-investment with local families and leaders. For us, service learning has always been about deeper partnerships. It’s about building classrooms with communities, listening, and leaving with a stronger commitment to equity. That’s why these essays resonate—because they’re rooted in real change, for both students and communities. Did you write about a service trip in your college essay—or advise someone who did? We want to hear your take. 🎓👇 #CollegeAdmissions #CollegeEssays #ServiceLearning #ExperientialLearning #EducationForImpact #SocialImpact #AuthenticityMatters #SDG4
