Benton, Detective James Franklin Tindal, and United States Special Deputy Marshal Augustus Harris. On this date in 1955, Policeman Lawrence Aytes was killed while attempting to rescue a citizen during the Charleston Tidewater Terminal fire. On this date in 1955, Sergeant Jessie Benton and Detective James Tindal were killed in an automobile accident near Holly Hill, South Carolina, while returning to Charleston to assist at the Charleston Tidewater Terminal fire. On this date in 1878, Special Deputy Marshal Gus Harris was shot and killed in the public square in front of the Edgefield County Courthouse in Edgefield, South Carolina, while attempting to arrest a man who was wanted for shooting another man several years earlier.
