When Andres Escobar experienced sudden chest pain during his daily walk, he never imagined it would lead to the discovery of a 99% blockage in one of his heart's main arteries. Thanks to the expert cardiac team at SHN, he received life-saving care when every second counted. Andres' experience is one example of a growing need for cardiac care across Scarborough—a challenge recently highlighted in The Globe and Mail. As the designated cardiac centre for the Scarborough-Durham region, SHN treats approximately 85 heart attack patients every month, performs more than 5,500 catheterization (cath) and electrophysiology (EP) procedures annually, and provides more than 40,000 outpatient cardiac visits each year. With demand for cardiac care projected to increase by 20% over the next five years, SHN has a bold plan to build a new cath and EP lab and renovate three existing labs at Centenary Hospital. Thanks to donor support, these upgrades will bring some of the most advanced cardiac technology in Ontario, helping more patients receive life-saving care close to home.
