Our colleague, Fátima Andraca, Country Director at Save the Children Venezuela, shares the immediate impact of two devastating earthquakes. Families have spent a second night sheltering in open spaces amid fears of further building collapses and raising serious concerns over children’s safety and their immediate needs. Venezuela has declared a national emergency following two consecutive 7.5 and 7.2 magnitude earthquakes in the north-central region of the country, putting thousands of children and families at risk. At least 255 people have been killed and 4,500 injured as of 25 June, according to the country’s health ministry, although these numbers are likely to rise. Save the Children and partners are on the ground, we are working urgently to assess needs and support affected communities and vulnerable children.
