Most investors see only one number when evaluating mutual fund costs: the Total Expense Ratio, or TER. From 1 April 2026, SEBI’s new framework will provide greater transparency by separating: Base Expense Ratio (BER): Fund management and eligible scheme-level expenses. Total Expense Ratio (TER): BER plus permitted brokerage, transaction costs and statutory levies. A clearer structure should make mutual fund costs easier to understand and compare.
