Systemic constraints require systemic collaboration. Our Sappi Southern Africa Leadership, recently attended the National Business Initiative (NBI) 30th Anniversary celebration in Sandton, Johannesburg, an event marking three decades of collective leadership between business, government, and civil society. Reflecting on the NBI’s journey since its founding in 1995 at the request of former President Nelson Mandela, the evening highlighted the vital role that progressive business plays in nation-building and economic transformation. During the reception, Graeme had the privilege of engaging with President Cyril Ramaphosa to discuss how public-private partnerships can move from dialogue to delivery, scaling up technical skills, expanding youth employment pathways, and accelerating a just climate transition.
