Maxine Chowles' relationship with paper took root long before her own career in the industry. As a child in South Africa, she watched her mother build a life at Sappi and bring that world home with her: from tales of paper-making workshops to the handmade sheets left behind, each with its own texture, weight and character. That was when Maxine first understood that paper was not just a product to be purchased in a store. It was something organic, something that could be shaped with care and imagination. Today, those early connections resonate for Maxine and her young family. In the books read to her daughters at bedtime, in the notebooks her husband makes by hand, and in the simple joy of seeing children discover the dreams and ideas that paper can hold. “You can pass on the joy. And when it starts to fall apart, that’s okay, because it can be recycled into something new.” Our storytelling series celebrates the relationships built between people and natural materials – relationships that are Made for Life.
