Blood transfusions are a critical component of modern healthcare. An estimated 118.5 million blood donations are collected worldwide each year, yet supply does not always meet demand. Blood consists of three key components, each serving a distinct medical purpose: Red blood cells transport oxygen throughout the body and are used in transfusions for patients with severe blood loss, anemia, or cancer-related conditions. Platelets support the blood clotting process and are commonly used in the treatment of patients with bleeding disorders or those undergoing chemotherapy. Plasma contains proteins and antibodies essential for treating over 100 conditions, including blood clotting disorders and autoimmune diseases. Unlike whole blood, plasma can be donated up to once a week. Today, on World Blood Donor Day, we recognize the contribution of the millions of voluntary donors who support healthcare systems globally. #WorldBloodDonorDay #BloodDonation #PublicHealth #Sanofi
