In South Tyrol, northern Italy, the Bronzolo Bypass Tunnel is a key infrastructure project aimed at diverting heavy traffic from the SS12 Brenner corridor and providing long-term relief for the local community. The 702-meter tunnel is excavated beneath residential areas and the Aldino River in highly challenging ground conditions, including permeable alluvial deposits, glacial moraine, gravel, and unstable debris flow material. Construction is carried out using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) with sequential excavation under a pipe umbrella system. Ground stability is ensured through shotcrete, steel lattice girders, systematic rock bolting, and intensive jet grouting, supported by Sandvik Ground Support’s AT Pipe Umbrella System and DSI Hollow Bar anchors. This integrated approach enables controlled excavation and steady progress in loose ground. The project showcases the close collaboration between Sandvik Ground Support and STRABAG AG. In the video, Lukas Mair, Project Manager at STRABAG AG, Direktion Nord shares key insights from the project and its execution. ▶️ Watch the video to see how advanced ground support and strong partnerships master complex ground conditions. #SandvikMining #STRABAG #SuccessStory #CaseStory #NATM #GroundSupport
