Disabling bombs without detonation 💣 In the ‘90s, Sandia researchers developed the Percussion-Actuated Nonelectric Disrupter to keep bomb technicians safe and disable bombs without detonating them. The PAN Disrupter works by interrupting a bomb’s internal components while helping preserve evidence. The PAN Disrupter has become the primary tool used by bomb squads nationwide to remotely disable conventional, handmade bombs. The technology was used to disable the Unabomber’s device number 17, safely disable Richard Reid’s shoe bombs and was deployed during the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta and the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. “This is another example of our national labs’ technological wizardry being put to good use to support America’s security,” then-Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham said.
