Nice piece from Jeremias Schroeder, the Abbot Primate. He reminds us (during this era of great disruption that flirts with various kinds of extinction-level events) of the many lessons we can learn from the discipline of monasticism. Reflecting on centuries of Benedictine adaptability should both give us hope and inspire us today to act with confidence. Schroeder writes, “Because the monks neither expected perfection from themselves nor despaired of human frailty, they were able to build institutions that were realistic, flexible, and resilient.” Amen.
