Across Latin America, coastal communities are on the front lines of climate change and ocean degradation. Yet most of the science to understand and address these threats exists only in English. That means many people are left out of the conversation and solutions. #Generation17 Young Leader José Francisco Ochoa decided to change that. Learn more about his story here: https://lnkd.in/gN3WGFS5 In 2023, the Ecuadorian biologist and three colleagues co-founded Academia del Océano—one of the first ocean education centers in his country to teach entirely in Spanish. At their coastal center, students tour mangroves, clean beaches, and learn about climate action. Virtual programming extends that reach to students across Latin America and beyond, training a new generation of scientists and conservationists. Since 2023, more than 10,000 students have taken part in Academia del Océano's programs, and over 500 have earned university certifications in ocean science.
