B.F. Goodrich Corporation invented pneumatic deicing boots around 1929–1930 (with the first commercial system introduced in 1932 for the Northrop Alpha mail plane). The rubber boots, installed on wing and tail leading edges, inflate with engine bleed air to crack formed ice and shed it into the slipstream. The system cycles automatically, sequentially inflating and deflating boot sections, in icing conditions and remains widely used on general aviation, turboprop, regional, and business aircraft today.
