Seven years ago, I was leading development on a WebAR experience for Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse leveraging 8th Wall and Amazon Sumerian. It was not only the first commercial project for 8th Wall but also one the first commercial Web AR projects ever and the first to use SLAM. Today, 8th Wall announced that they would be winding down their services. It feels surreal looking back. At the time I knew it was a big deal, but also didn’t expect that it would make such an impact on my professional career. After Spider-Man, I had the opportunity to work on a number of incredible WebAR experiences. One personal favorite was a project for Jumanji, but I also had the chance to build for LEGO, Disney, and the PGA Tour, among others. So while I’m sad to see this chapter close for 8th Wall, I also want to celebrate all the amazing work that was made possible because of it. So thank you 8th Wall, it’s been a fun, if sometimes wild, ride.
