Creative Creations in Academy by an Amateur Architect! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1st of 3 Posts in series; composed by an Intelligent Assistant! 'Beyond Engineering: Architecture, Design, and the Creation of Space' > A marine engineer is often associated with ships, machinery, and technology; yet engineering also cultivates a parallel ability to envision and create. > For Chartered Marine Engineer SAJID HUSSAIN, this vision found expression in architecture and campus development. Sajid’s spontaneous attraction, since his childhood, in his home town Pabna, was to the building techniques of Historical Zamindar Palaces/Mansions around; later learned skills in Rajshahi Cadet College (1972-78) through a legendary teacher Mr. Souja Hayder (died: 1998), Asst. Prof. (Arts-Crafts), sketches/drawings in Class VII-VIII, Geometrical & Technical Drawing in SSC (O-Levels), Engineering Drawing in HSC (A-Levels) and Machine Drawing in Pre-Sea Marine Engineering in Bangladesh Marine Academy (BMA). After sailing in Bangladesh Shipping corporation’s ocean-going ships for 13 years (Cadet to Chief Engineer: 1980-1993), he joined BMA in 1993 as a Faculty, rose up to Commandant and served till 2023. There he contributed in shaping the physical identity of the Academy through gateways, campus planning, aesthetic enhancements, and innovative concepts. His notable architectural designs & design concepts along with the cooperation of the PWD and the Dept. of Architecture are as below: AKM Nurul Amin Square New Admin Block New Cadet Block Female Cadet Block Canopy at Commandant Office entrance Seafarers Lodge New parade ground & gallery Eminent Personalities murals/memorial Exterior decoration of existing Cadet Block and Admin Block Post-Sea Cadet Block and Commandant’s Bungalow (Exterior) New & Improvements to roads New Mosque New Auditorium New Workshop New Seamanship Block New Swimming Pool Techno Marina Complex (simulator based research centre) Overall campus environment Campus Layout for the New Four Marine Academies at Rangpur, Pabna, Sylhet & Borishal These were not merely construction projects; efforts to create spaces that inspire discipline, pride, professionalism, and a sense of belonging. His work reflected a philosophy: 'Education is not confined to classrooms; it is embedded in the environment itself.' Combining engineering discipline with creative imagination, Sajid helped transform the Academy into a place where architecture supports learning, identity, and institutional excellence. Closing Thought: Buildings provide shelter, but thoughtful design creates inspiration. Through his architectural vision, SAJID HUSSAIN helped shape not only structures, but also the experiences of generations of maritime professionals. P/S: It is a part of his forthcoming book ‘Across Oceans and Horizons: The Life and Legacy of Seafarer Sajid’
