We had the chance to speak to journalist Katie Strick at The Standard about the launch of Safest Way, and to share our recent experience after prominent media exposure and the, expected, polarising social media response. We appreciate her honest take and less vanilla feedback, reviewing our solution from both sides. The title is a little clickbait, but the article itself captures the complexity of the conversation well. Safest Way is not here to pretend an app can solve male violence. There may well be technology being built to identify predatory behaviour before harm happens. We hope there is. But Safest Way stays in its geospatial lane on making the most of the data available, then resurfacing it to our users in a useful way. One thing Katie got wrong: it’s not 10,000 users anymore, it’s 15,000. And our small team of a product manager, a geospatial researcher, street crime academics from UCL and King’s, and a retired Google advisor, are grateful and proud of that. 💜💛
