Can structural instruments, such as #clinical #practice #guidelines, function as levers for #equity, #diversity and #inclusion for better healthcare for all? In our new publication, Awa Naghipour, Marcel Gemander, Eva Becher and I argue that not only they can, but they should. https://lnkd.in/en74WgjZ CPG developement committees are not only skewed in terms of gender and global representation, the guidelines that are being developed are also mostly unaware of #sex and #gender. Less than 1% of all recommendations included in #internal #medicine CPGs developed in the last decade focus on sex and/or gender beyond reproduction and fertility. Less then 1%. We need to do a lot better. And not just on sex and gender. We need to expand standardization to systematically include #equity and #diversity principles across the process. We need to ensure representation in CPG development committees. We need to start having discussions about the classifications of knowledge used for data inclusion. And we need to explicitly call out knowledge gaps, especially the ones affecting women, gender-diverse people and discriminated minorities in healthcare. Thanks to Jocalyn Clark and the BMJ for their visionary leadership on this. To Smruti Patel for being a fantastic editor, to our thoughtful reviewers and to the Gates Foundation for making this - and the entire collection - possible and highlighting the role philanthropy can play in times of crumbling certainties and growing restrictions.
