Cameron Flemingβπ ππππππππ πππππππππ Taking the Gautrain to Centurion, every day was the beginning of a journey that would only bring Cameron Fleming special memories and lifelong learnings. Fleming, a third-year Economics student at Stellenbosch, has performed the role of venue assistant at the home of the Pretoria Capitals for the past two Betway SA20 seasons. Hailing from a sports-crazed family, he dived headfirst into this opportunity and embraced it with plenty of passion and determination. βSport's always been in my blood my whole life. Both my parents lived it. So, when someone in SA20 reached out about a venue assistant role at Centurion, I didn't even think twice,β Fleming told Betway SA20. βI wanted to understand how an event like SA20 actually runs from the inside. You don't really get a classroom better than that.β There are not many who have the opportunity to see first-hand the behind-the-scenes workings of a professional operation such as Betway SA20, and Fleming is fully appreciative that he could absorb how it all operated. It allowed him to grow into his role, and he was handed greater responsibilities in his second season. βMy first season, Season 3, was about learning the machine, getting to know the guidelines,β said the 20-year-old. βEvery party fits together to make each match day work. And it was a really huge, awesome learning experience within my first year. βBut by the time I got to Season 4, those sorts of roles and responsibilities were completely clear to me. And I got enough trust from my managers. βA lot of the work actually happened before the gates even opened. And that gave me a really awesome opportunity to do the cool work that I love doing, which is problem-solving and thinking on your feet.β Fleming was also determined to learn from his more experienced colleagues, taking important bits of information from each Betway SA20 staff member he dealt with. βI made a choice to treat every single person in the SA20 ecosystem as a teacher. Learning and watching and listening to what each person does in every different department,β he said. βPeople like Lynn (Naude, Betway SA20 COO), who has a brilliant full scope and grasp of the whole operation. Broadcast, commercial deals, operations. Learning from Renelle (Naidoo, Broadcast & Special Projects Manager), learning from David Brooke (Partnerships Manager). βPeople that are really awesome at their job. And learning from my managers who were so, so, so good to me. So, I wouldn't say it was one person, but the entire SA20 family that helped guide me and helped me learn through this experience.β Although Flemingβs initial plan after his Economics studies at Maties is to join the Royal Navy, he admits that the βsports bug has bit meβ and foresees a future where his time spent at Betway SA20 will be most beneficial.
