Is it time to put the umbrella away yet? A wet start to winter has provided encouraging signs for our reservoirs, with several rainfall events – including this week’s – helping to increase soil moisture across our catchments and generate water inflows. Since the beginning of winter, more than 25 billion litres of water has flowed into these storages, which is the second highest volume of inflows across this same period in more than a decade. The 24 hours to 8am this morning alone contributed approximately 10 billion litres, helping lift our combined reservoir level to 55 per cent capacity – compared to 40 per cent this time last year. Mount Bold and Myponga reservoirs have been some of the main beneficiaries, with their storage levels increasing by 24 per cent and 13 per cent respectively so far this winter. While it has certainly been a great start to winter, we will hopefully see more rainfall events across the coming months to generate further water inflows to our reservoirs in advance of what the Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting to be a dry late winter and spring.
