Christa Reicher Elected Chair of the Commission for Sustainable Building 💯 Professor Christa Reicher has been elected chair of the Commission for Sustainable Building (KNBau), which advises the Umweltbundesamt - German Environment Agency on sustainable construction and building policy. Members of the Commission are appointed by the President of the Agency for three-year terms. The 15-member interdisciplinary expert panel brings together expertise in environmental protection, public health, and climate policy while contributing an ecological perspective to discussions on the future of the construction sector. In March 2026, the Commission began its fourth term with a focus on how sustainable building practices can become standard practice. Professor Christa Reicher heads the Lehrstuhl und Institut für Städtebau at RWTH Aachen University. “Leading the Commission provides an opportunity to help shape current policy discussions and contribute to the future direction of sustainable construction,” said Reicher. 😀 In the coming months, the Commission will focus in particular on how circular planning approaches can become more widely adopted, how vacant office and commercial buildings can be converted into housing, and how successful pilot projects can be scaled up and implemented more broadly. The KNBau develops recommendations for the German Environment Agency on research priorities, regulatory instruments, and strategies to identify and communicate sustainability opportunities within the construction sector. It also promotes a holistic, ecologically oriented approach to sustainable construction in Germany and internationally. Areas such as energy-efficient retrofitting, circular use of materials, and the sustainable development of existing urban structures continue to offer significant opportunities for environmental protection and resource conservation.
