What happens when lightning strikes a wind turbine? In most cases, nothing noticeable happens at all. There‘s no blackout, and the turbine doesn‘t shut down. Modern wind turbines are designed to manage, not avoid lightning. There are four steps to this: ▪︎ Lightning receptors at the blade tips intercept the strike at the most exposed point ▪︎ Conductors inside the blade carry the current safely downwards without damaging the structure ▪︎ A grounding system runs the energy through the nacelle and tower into the foundation – and on into the ground ▪︎ Surge protection shields the electronics from voltage spikes after the strike Wind turbines are among the most lightning-exposed structures on earth. The engineering behind their protection is a core part of how they're built. Lightning may hit, but the turbine will keep turning.
