Ever wondered how turbine blades make it to a wind farm? At our Golticlay onshore wind farm near Lybster in the Scottish Highlands, the journey involved a specialist piece of equipment called a blade lifter – and the world's shortest street. The biggest challenge – navigating the narrow streets of Wick – came right at the start of the 16-mile delivery route from Wick Harbour to the wind farm. A blade lifter tilted the blade upward at an angle to take tight corners that would otherwise be impassable. Once through town, the blades were transferred onto conventional trailers for the rest of the journey. Along the way, they navigated along what the Guinness Book of Records has verified as the world's shortest street. This was also the first time RWE had used this technology in the UK. Sometimes getting a wind farm built takes engineering around the tightest possible corner. Photo: Alan Hendry
