It sets up a bit of resistance, so the image has to fight its way across an uneven surface rather than just sitting flat on top. For this series, I finished the works with a translucent orange varnish that reminds me of amber, a material that has preserved traces of ancient life for millions of years. Rather than working in a sterile spray booth, I paint out in the open air, letting dust and sediment from the surrounding car workshops become trapped in the sticky surface. This one even caught a tiny insect, which felt strangely appropriate. The surface doesn’t just cover what came before. It captures a physical record of a very specific afternoon, locking a tiny fragment of its environment into the painting. . .
