In May of 1869, Thomas Rowland, owner of Continental Iron Works in Greenpoint, New York, was issued the first U.S. patent for an offshore oil drilling rig for his “submarine drilling apparatus.” Many experts believe the designing of this fixed, working platform for drilling offshore helped inspire some offshore exploration technologies used today.
