[Project] Ethiopia is today one of Africa’s most dynamic electricity markets. With a population exceeding 110 million, rapid industrialisation, and an ambition to electrify the entire country, demand for electricity is rising sharply. At the same time, the existing transmission network faces ageing equipment and regional tensions, making system operation particularly challenging. To prepare for the modernisation and expansion of the transmission network, RTE international has been supporting Ethiopian Electric Power - የኢትዮጵያ ኤሌክትሪክ ኃይል (EEP) since 2022. Following an initial study project, our teams have engaged in a technical cooperation programme across several key areas: 1️⃣Network protection policy review: nearly 200 substations, 400 power transformers, and 330 transmission lines analysed to enhance asset protection and minimise outages. 3️⃣In-depth assessment of critical assets: power transformers: identification of ageing equipment and development of preventive or corrective action plans to reduce technical and financial risks. 3️⃣Strategic and organisational support: exchanges and study visits in France to inform managerial decision-making and prepare EEP teams for upcoming transformations under the RISED (Reinforcement of Infrastructure for Sustainable Electricity) programme. 4️⃣Technical specifications harmonisation: alignment with international standards to facilitate procurement, operation, and maintenance of infrastructure. The deliverables, a reliable database, a clear network assessment, an updated protection plan, and consolidated technical specifications, provide EEP with a solid technical foundation to plan and execute its network modernisation projects.
