When we launched SafePaws earlier this year, we knew we had to do more than just provide emergency pet boarding… we wanted to actively contribute to improving the system that supports those experiencing crisis. Last month, RSPCA Victoria joined organisations and advocates across the country for May's domestic and family violence (DFV) national awareness campaign. The reality is that many victim-survivors don't leave unsafe situations because they fear what will happen to their pet. So, along with practical support including emergency pet boarding or veterinary care for impacted animals, crisis pack provisions containing food, bowls, bedding, carriers, and even comfort items - often overlooked when crisis strikes - our team also advocates for policy change when it comes to pet-inclusive options for safe-haven planning. We also facilitate education sessions for frontline and welfare professionals, where unique insight is shared about the impact DFV has on companion animals, and breaking down the importance of involving pets in risk assessments and safe pathway planning. Because support doesn't just stop at pet boarding and supplies, and pets aren't "just animals" to the people who love them. Their pets are their family.
