We’ve responded to the government’s consultation on growing up in the online world — and our message is clear: Statistical literacy must be at the heart of online safety. In a digital environment shaped by social media and AI, young people need more than basic media literacy. They need the skills to: ❓ Question data and spot bias 🤖 Understand how algorithms shape what they see 🌍 Make sense of information in complex, real-world contexts We’re also calling for: Stronger evidence on how platforms actually operate; continuous, transparent evaluation (not one-off checks); Greater regulatory powers to scrutinise algorithms.
