🌦️ Our Climate Change Task Force have released a new explainer: Artificial Intelligence in weather forecasting—and what it means for reliability, uncertainty and decision-making. Our growing series of explainers aim to demystify the statistical ideas that underpin climate science, helping people better understand the data behind critical conversations. This latest piece looks at: 🌩️ Why meteorological organisations are adopting AI alongside traditional physics-based models 🌤️ Where AI models perform well—and where challenges remain (especially for local detail and extremes) 🍃 The role of statistical thinking in evaluating forecasts, quantifying uncertainty, and keeping models accountable 🌈 The trade-offs between speed, accuracy and energy use One key takeaway: the future of forecasting is likely a blend of AI and physics—supported by strong statistical methods to ensure trustworthy insights. This work highlights the importance of clear, accessible explanations of complex concepts so that decisions—from daily planning to climate policy—are made on a sound footing. 🔗 Read the full explainer: https://lnkd.in/ec8uxgdC #ClimateChange #AI #WeatherForecasting #Statistics #DataScience #ScienceCommunication
