Gammon Construction Limited Hosts Jardine Matheson Scholars for a Site Visit Highlighting the strength of our alumni network, a Jardine Scholar (Jacky Fanjun Yang) currently working at Gammon Construction Limited recently hosted an exclusive site visit for our current The University of Hong Kong scholars at the Kwun Tong Composite Development (KTCD) project. While hosted at a construction site, the visit extended beyond traditional engineering. It provided critical, real-world insights into environmental sustainability, safety innovation, and corporate governance, of study that are highly relevant to scholars across a good range of disciplines, including law, environmental sciences, sustainability, mathematics, and engineering. During the visit, the team provided an overview of the project’s background, construction timeline, and operation challenges. Scholars were introduced to cutting-edge industry innovations, including: 1. Advanced Engineering & Sustainability: Modular Integrated Construction (MiC), precast units, and the pioneer pilot use of structural bamboo. 2. Law, Policy & Occupational Health: Advanced Smart Site Safety System (4S) features, such as digital fingerprint locks and health-and-weather-monitoring smartwatches, demonstrate how regulatory safety standards are enforced on site. 3. Circular Economy & Corporate Synergy: The enhanced collaboration among Jardine's portfolio companies. Scholars learned about real-world circularity initiatives, such as converting waste cooking oil from Jardine restaurants into biodiesel, and recycling partnerships with Hongkong Land Limited and Jardine Engineering Corporation, involving tempered glass and biochar. The guided site walk offered firsthand perspective on managing complex urban traffic conditions and witnessed how large-scale projects balance operation efficiency with environmental stewardship. This visit successfully demonstrated how diverse academic theories from environmental law to material science, converge to build our future sustainable cities. Thanks Carmen Chan, Eddie Tse for making this happen. #alumnistrength #jardinescholars #construction #lawpolicy #circulareconomy #corporatesynergies
