When Sheerness Dockyard Church (Grade II listed) was brought back to life after decades of closure, the brief demanded a careful balance: preserve heritage character while creating a bright, flexible community space for a new generation of users. With the roof requiring full reconstruction, Hugh Broughton Architects specified four Skyway Circular Fixed Rooflights to introduce generous top light and support the building’s new programme (events space, exhibition area and café). Specifier Takeaways: ✅Daylight-first design: rooflights flood the interior with natural light, reducing reliance on artificial lighting. ✅Thermal performance: contributes to an energy-efficient envelope for year-round comfort. ✅Safety in use: Class 2 Non-Fragile glazing supports safer roof access for inspection and maintenance. ✅Form + context: circular rooflights complement the restored architecture while delivering modern performance. The project has since been recognised with a 2024 Civic Trust Award, celebrating the building’s sensitive renewal and long-term community value.
