We’ve completed a four-year hydrogen combustion testing programme with easyJet marking an important step in exploring the role of hydrogen in future aviation. The programme culminated in a modified Pearl 15 engine running on 100% hydrogen at NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Stennis Space Center, including at maximum take-off thrust and across a full simulated flight cycle. It has given us valuable insight into how hydrogen behaves in a modern aero gas turbine, from combustion through to full system integration. Ground-testing allowed us to validate combustion, fuel and control system technologies, and demonstrate the safe use of hydrogen through design, commissioning, maintenance and testing. These learnings will now support our wider work on fuel agnostic next-generation engine technologies, including UltraFan®, as we continue to improve efficiency and build our understanding of future energy solutions. Thank you to our teams and our partners at easyJet, Tata Consultancy Services, NASA, and the Health and Safety Executive for their contribution to this programme.
