We are accelerating the introduction of advanced nuclear technologies in the UK in partnership with the United Kingdom National Nuclear Laboratory (UKNNL) and the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA). Working together, we can deliver a new sovereign zero-carbon power source for the UK, boosting energy resilience and creating skilled jobs and export opportunities. Joining forces will enable us to accelerate the research and development efforts needed for the deployment of High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Advanced Modular Reactors (AMRs) and progress the qualification and manufacture of the next generation fuel that powers them. AMRs benefit from the same innovation in modular design as the Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) developed by Rolls-Royce SMR, but are smaller in size and power output, and use different reactor technology. They can deliver energy resilience and provide zero-carbon power for everything from industrial plants and data centres, to remote communities, military bases and even shipping. Rising global demand for energy security makes AMRs – which can be made in a factory – a potential source of significant exports for the UK. AMRs use Coated Particle Fuel (CPF), which is not only fuel accident tolerant and resilient to irradiation and corrosion, but provides higher operating temperatures and increased fuel efficiency. Each particle of Uranium is encased by multiple protective layers, which protect the fission product under even the most extreme conditions. The UK has an opportunity to create a homegrown advantage through the production of this innovative fuel. Read more: https://lnkd.in/etNnGw_g
