Reengineering a 29-part assembly for a class 3 medical device – with one clear objective: reduce complexity without compromising performance. THE CHALLENGE 🧩 Redesigning and optimizing a complex 29-part assembly for a class 3 medical device used in operating theatres while safeguarding overall system functionality, safety and handling. THE APPROACH 📐 Our development goal was to smartly redesign the entire assembly for a simplified manufacturing process and automated assembly. In close collaboration with the customer, we systematically simplified manufacturing and assembly steps: ▶ Evaluation of all individual parts in terms of practicality and manufacturing complexity. ▶ Development of precision-fit injection molded components enabling automated assembly. THE RESULT ▶ Reduction of the total number of parts, leading to lower dependency on external suppliers. ▶ Time and cost savings due to material reduction, also contributing to resource efficiency. ▶ Increased process stability. ▶ Plastic-compatible and process-safe production. ▶ Improved product design, ergonomics and functionality: the intelligent redesign also made it possible to integrate additional functions into the device that previously required an add-on device. 💡 Complex systems do not have to grow more complicated over time. With the right engineering mindset, they become leaner, smarter and more efficient.
